Your Purpose Drives Your Motivation

Your purpose is your why

When setting a goal it is important to remember the why behind what it is you want to accomplish. It can be difficult to stay motivated when working toward a goal, especially when faced with challenges and obstacles. We can become doubtful, stressed, or overwhelmed. However, remembering the purpose behind what it is you want to do and why you want to do it will help give you the motivation to keep going when you are faced with challenges or you might feel like giving up.

I travel a lot for different events across the country and many challenges can arise like flight delays, schedule changes, rental car hang ups, etc. There are times it feels challenging and it would be very easy to become frustrated and stressed and feel like there are nothing but setbacks, but then I remember my why, my purpose, which is my passion for reaching others through speaking, and this gives me the motivation to make it through all of the challenges I might face.

Taking Action Comes With Risk

Making big decisions, creating and working toward a goal, often comes with risk, which can be scary, and it can be hard to take that first step to get to where you want to go. Sometimes we have to face our fears head on and take a leap of faith toward that first step. There is the risk of pursuing what you want and falling short. There is also the risk of not pursuing what you want and then later in life wondering, what if I would have tried? Avoid being the person who says, “I wish I would have…” by remembering that there is risk in everything that you do. Focus on the purpose behind what you want to do, not the risk.

Progress Versus Perfection

Everyone wants to succeed in life. We all set goals with good intention of achieving them, but too often we are focused on doing things perfectly, having all the answers immediately before we take that first step. Sometimes we focus more on what we haven’t done and how far we have left to go to reach our goal and this can lead to feelings of disappointment and failure. It is more important to focus on how far you’ve come from where you started, acknowledging the accomplishments and progress made along the way.

Stay Focused, Stay Committed

In life, you can achieve what you put your mind to as long as you are willing to do what it takes to stay committed when challenges happen. Reminding yourself of the purpose and motivation behind the goal is what will help you stay committed when you run into obstacles or setbacks. Tracking and measuring your progress will help you gain perspective and you will feel a sense of accomplishment, which will help you stay committed and motivated to continue working toward your goal.

What is the main motivation behind your goal? What are some small steps you can take today to make progress towards your goal?
